Washington Post expands digital international drive in London

The New York Times’s main competitor will soon be knocking on its door in London as The Washington Post seeks to further expand its presence in the UK capital. The Jeff Bezos-owned outlet is looking to hire breaking news reporters alongside a breaking news editor as part of a wider international strategy first revealed in late 2020.
These positions will be complimented by sales staffers and marketing managers. London will serve as The Washington Post’s main European hub, while Seoul will be the Post’s main breaking news hub in Asia.
Though the roles are based in the UK, the journalists will be focused on generating and covering US, Middle East and European-related news, allowing Post readers to awake with the very latest information on their desktops and smartphones.
“This position will be staffed on a five-day shift that includes at least one weekend day; it will be based in London and is not eligible for remote work. Candidates who are available to work both weekend days, on either a Thursday to Monday or Friday to Tuesday schedule, are particularly encouraged to apply,” one of the job ads read.
The London operation falls under the leadership of Sara Sorcher, formerly the editor of the Post’s PowerPost, a group of newsletters focused on DC ‘power players’.
The breaking news strategy is not too dissimilar to The New York Times’ focus on live blogs, however the Old Grey Lady has gone out of its way to produce more features, interviews and other original content focused on the UK. Due to its success, this division is unlikely to dramatically change under new Executive Editor Joe Kahn, who is assuming one of the most powerful positions in journalism in June.
